TL;DR: After years of building custom themes, we’ve fully embraced the block-based future of WordPress and Blocksy is our theme of choice. It’s fast, flexible, and packed with modern features that make it perfect for agencies, freelancers, and blog owners.
As a web development agency, we used to handcraft our themes from a custom boilerplate. That old-school workflow served us well for years. But with the introduction of the Gutenberg block editor and the rise of modern block-based themes, we decided it was time to evolve. Enter: Blocksy.
In fact, this website – prystine.co.uk – is built using Blocksy.
It’s fast, flexible, plays beautifully with Gutenberg, and has quickly become our go-to recommendation for clients, freelancers, and fellow agencies looking for a seriously solid WordPress theme.
Here’s why it get’s a big thumbs up from us and why we’d recommend it to anyone looking to build a WordPress site be it a blog owner, freelancer or agency.

Just like when we were choosing a Gutenberg extension plugin (spoiler: we went with Stackable), we spent time researching and testing themes. GeneratePress and Kadence were solid contenders, but Blocksy came out on top after weighing up three key factors:
Let’s break those down:
Speed matters. Whether you’re chasing SEO rankings or trying to reduce bounce rates, a snappy site is non-negotiable.
Blocksy is lightweight out of the box and doesn’t bloat your pages with unnecessary scripts or styles. It also includes some smart performance settings, like removing the legacy emoji script or lazy loading Gravatars, which helps you bolster your site’s speed even more.
Our own homepage, built with Blocksy + Stackable (and WP Rocket), scores very well in GTMetrix and Lighthouse without needing any extra optimisation.

Blocksy is a block-based theme done right. It offers deep design control straight from the WordPress’ customiser, with intuitive toggles and layout options that don’t make you feel like you’re fighting the theme.
It also comes with:

If you want to skip the setup and go straight to building, Blocksy offers a great set of professionally designed starter sites. Whether you’re building a portfolio, an online shop, or a business site, you can start from a template and tweak it to your heart’s content.
👉 Check out their starter sites – they’re great, not the usual demo junk.
Blocksy Pro comes packed with a huge array of options and improvements for WooCommerce. From the intuitive product page layout builder to the advanced styling options for the gallery as well as a number of additional features.
You can enable a floating cart, wishlist, variation swatches, custom tabs and much more. In the past, these features would have required multiple plugins, bloating out your site and increasing the security risk.
One of the big wins with Blocksy is the licensing model. While you can absolutely get a lot done with the free version, the Pro upgrade is affordable, great value for money and they offer a lifetime license.
Lifetime licences as an agency are great. We can deploy the software across client sites without worrying about renewing yet another yearly subscription or passing license costs on to clients.
No tool is perfect. Here are a few minor drawbacks we’ve noticed:
That said, these are very minor gripes and honestly, nothing that’s been a dealbreaker for us or our clients.
Blocksy nails the balance between modern design, performance, and usability. It’s powerful without being bloated, beginner-friendly without being basic, and flexible enough for full-scale agency projects.
If you’re building with Gutenberg (and you should be), Blocksy is hands down one of the best themes to build on in 2025 and beyond.
